Even less conventionally "commercial" is another 1951 drawing, of the fine old Bull Hotel at Horncastle Lincolnshire. At a much later date Roulstone drew the outside of this hostelry to show the front, but in this instance - as he often did with old coaching-inns - he has depicted the Courtyard. The incorporation of an archway - as also of bridges, walls, trees, and even churches if one happened to be close to hand - is incidentally a typical Roulstone touch.

Alan Roulstone's protracted pub-crawl took him into all parts of England and Wales, and on several occasions during the 1950s he was based in the West Country. His delightful 1952 drawing of Ye Olde Poppe Inne at Tatworth was one of the earliest made in this part of Britain, but many more followed, and in 1955 appeared a slim book entitled A Pub-Crawler's Companion: the west Country.

Roulstone's very first guidebook to inns and taverns, also entitled A Pub-Crawler's Companion, was devoted to the Wye Valley, and appeared in 1954. One of the pubs prominently featured was the Moon & Sixpence at Tintern Gwent; though the drawing shown here was made earlier, in 1953. Already certain stylistic changes are in evidence.
