Over the years Alan Roulstone drew a large number of pubs in his native Grantham, Lincolnshire. His 1962 exterior of the Blue Pig is certainly one of the most pleasing. He drew the place a second time four years later, when there was a change of landlord, and this was something that happened with some regularity throughout England and Wales.

In 1963 (and not for the first time) Roulstone produced an excellent view of the outside of the famous old coaching-Inn, the Bell Inn at Stilton, Cambridgeshire, in which he gave considerable prominence the fine old sign. But the stone work too is accorded the closest attention, and this must be considered a highly satisfying example of Roulstone's work.

Many changes overcame the English (and Welsh) public house during the 1960s. Always, however, the old was blended with the new, and in few places was this better accomplished than at Ye Olde Plough at Bolnhurst Bedfordshire, which Roulstone drew in 1964 - one of his peak years in this genre. Interior stone work - much in evidence - was one of the essential keynotes.
